strands of hope and beauty
Here’s an item that will pull at your heartstrings as much as it does at your purse-strings.
I was given one of these necklaces for my birthday and love it!
It’s a single strand necklace, which is long enough to be worn doubly or singly, and made of tightly rolled paper beads – from recycled magazines, calendars and scrap paper.
These cheerful and colourful necklaces are created by women living in a refugee camp in a remote region of Northern Uganda. Each beaded necklace is lovingly handmade by the grandmothers and caregivers of 163 orphans, many of whom have fled their villages and lost their parents due to the brutal activities of the Lord’s Resistance Army or to AIDS. The women have been trained to make these beautiful necklaces as a way to support the children with school fees and uniforms.
I have personally met with Lorna Pitcher, a terrific woman who has been to the camp and is bringing these necklaces back to Canada to raise funds. Each necklace conveys the spirit of caring and concern that these women share for the children in this camp.
You will see these necklaces for sale in stores with a card that says Ugandan Orphans Fund, prices range upwards to $25.00 each. However, Lorna has been kind enough to put us in touch with her wholesaler who will sell directly to clubcobi members who use the code: cobi, at a special price of 3 necklaces for $45.00 plus shipping (that’s $15.00 each for anyone with math skills like mine ) until March 17th. The necklaces range in length from 44” - 60” and although all are colourful, each is completely unique.
Three look great worn together, wound around to create a mass on a plain turtleneck or t-shirt. Or, if you prefer the look of one strand, keep one for yourself and give two to friends. Each one comes with a card that tells this inspiring story.
