taking back the house

And just like that, it’s over. Would we all agree? The shortest summer on record.

The only upside to the end of summer is the calming feeling of ‘taking back the house’.

What I mean by that is little things like not only emptying the weekend bags but also giving them a shake to get rid of the bits of sand and actually putting them away. Of putting the coolers away too and filling the fridge at home with food that will be eaten and not just left to sour or transported back up to the cottage. Of moving the tennis rackets that sat at the front door all summer and the fan that sat in the upstairs bedroom. Of giving the kids the last freezies and getting the ice box back to just ice. Sad symbols of summer’s end, yes, but also comforting in a way that only ‘order’ can bring.

Speaking of kids, lets all enjoy a moment of silence in respect for the parents out there who are breathing a sigh of relief this week. You know who you are - you made this summer the “best ever” for the little ones you love, regardless of the expense or exhaustion that making those memories may have brought.

Yup, another summer down, but the quiet of September is always lovely in a melancholy kind of way. Low-in-the-sky afternoon sunshine that glows through the trees and the lonely sound of cicada’s while the kids are back to the first days of school. A welcome respite from the chaos - at least for a few days.

Good question Linda!!
I checked with my brilliant friends at InVU Drapery in Toronto and here is what they said:

We’re not sure if Linda is referring to toss accent cushions or her sofa cushions; so we’ve given you solutions for both -

*      If it is toss cushions you may want to create a box like base to the cushion (this is a simple sewing project, sewing a seam forming a triangle from the inside; This “fake gusset” is a horizontal stitch that will only be visible on the side of the cushion; the base of the cushion will be wider and will sit comfortably on the sofa; to give you a visual - think of a relaxed hand bag.
As well, changing the inserts into feather ones; this will help give the cushion enough weight and will form into the sofa; keeping it in place and upright

*      If we are referring to the loose cushions that are part of the sofa (if the cushions are not reversible) try adding sticky Velcro to both sides (one on the cushion and the other on the deck or back of the sofa) this will help keep the cushion in place (with no sewing)

*      Alternatively, you can simply add shelving liners on the deck or back of the sofa under & behind the cushions - this works very well.  The non skid shelf liners are typically used to line kitchen cabinets or pots and pans drawer to prevent items from moving. You can find this product on a roll or pre-cut sizes – in colors but the best are the clear ones with little bubbles (better grip), washable and non-adhesive (available at home-supply places).

Thanks InVU!!
Let us know how it works Linda.

Now that all my efforts of making it the “best summer ever” are winding down, I am delighted to check out your blog. I now have a great starting point to choose a robin’s egg blue colour for my bathroom! And I will read your thoughts on your new couch as I ponder whether to reupholster my parents’ old couch or buy new. Thank you Cobi!
