The other day I was on an airplane and therefore had magazines in hand. When I opened the new issue of InStyle and turned to the advertisement for Target, I almost fell out of my seat (well, not really as I was strapped in, but you know what I mean).

I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. There, on a very expensive double-page-spread, was an ad for cobistyle but with the name ‘Threshold’ on it and a red bull’s eye in the corner. (Threshold is Target’s in-house ‘home’ line of products)

Is that me dozing on the sofa under the crab apple tree in my white living room? Visions of cobistyle dancing in my head? NO! It’s some other redhead (!) living my dream. I mean seriously - she stole all my stuff! Check out the photo of the ad closer…

…and then a smattering of current cobistyle products below…

See what I mean? It’s crazy! I guess I should be flattered that a major American chain is basing their home-decor look on something I’ve been building for five years.

There are other ads running for Threshold and although I could also be living in this kitchen for example, I don’t have the right hair colour and haven’t got a cobistyle kitchen line of products (yet).

I would be very happy in this house, no doubt…hmmm…I better keep working on cobistyle and maybe this dream will come to life too!

Cobi, I love your style. I have some of your products in my home! I love the colours and textures you use. Your are an inspiration to my design ideas! Thank you.

I saw the Threshold ad and loved it without realizing that it was so similar to cobistyle!  Now that you have pointed it out I realize why I was so drawn to it! The look is the same!  The ad presents the products as high end; however, I bet the goods at Target are not near the same “quality” as yours Cobi!

Love your style and look forward to seeing what else is being developed.
I’m pretty sure that if it was Hudson Bay who had your label in an ad they would have honoured your name. In general I am disappointed in Target in the Canadian marketplace, the stores have a very long way to go to resemble the U.S. locations that we all fell in love with.
Maybe with some well appointed labels like cobistyle they will find their footing and their respect for savvy Canadian consumers.

You guys are so funny!  You’re going to get me in trouble -  I’m sure Target didn’t copy little ol’ cobistyle!  They’ve probably never heard of cobistyle at US head office.  It’s just amazing how similar ‘looks’ can be developing in the zeitgeist and emerge at the same time.  I’m sure Martha has had it happen many times ; )  Thanks for your support though.  It’s nice to have such loyal friends.

The Target line is so obviously lifted from cobistyle! Stealing an entrepreneur’s vision and ideas is so low. I would have expected more from a large company with their resources. But your fans all know where the true inspiration came from, Cobi!

Thanks so much for your kind words!  You don’t have to wait for Target to come to Ottawa to see cobistyle (or the look of cobistyle ; ).  I was in your fine city a couple of weeks ago and visited a store named Dream Weaver on Richmond in Westboro and they have lots of fun pieces - particularly pillows.  Also Couvre Plancher Supreme on St. Joseph has a great selection.  I love Ottawa!  Thanks again, Cobi.

WOW Cobi!  I have been a fan of yours since your very first editorial in Canadian House & Home.  I love your style; your take on family-life and functional decorating; your colour choices; and your ideas for celebrating.  When I saw that ad last week I thought the same thing!!  In fact,  I thought - maybe you had some product placement and I would be able to get my hands on some cobistyle at Target when they come to Ottawa!  I’m not sure if “flattered” would be the word I would choose.  I remain a devoted reader and follow your success. Carie

YOU have style; and the person who copied your ideas KNOWS she/he lacks that talent.

When they look in the mirror,  the person looking back KNOWS they are a fake.  Sad eh!
