I’ve always been inspired by family photo and art walls.

The sense of a collage is more visually exciting to the eye than the usual placement of one or two pictures.

These are some of my favourites.

When we redecorated our master bedroom last year, I had a large blank wall to fill between our two windows and decided it would be a great place to showcase some of my favourite family photos and art.

Rather than deal with the commitment of hanging things directly on the wall, I splurged on 3 IKEA pictures rails ($16.99 ea.) and hung them staggered on the wall.

Then I went to work framing some pictures and pieces that were lingering around our house.

I thought I’d want all matching frames originally but quickly realized the variety creates interest.

I’m really happy with the result and the fact that as the kids change I can add new shots.

Now I just wish I had more room!

Hi Colette, I love the idea of showing off photos on a staircase where often there is a large bland and boring expanse of wall.  The big question is how wide is your staircase?  If it’s a wide staircase, I think you would be fine using picture rails.  The picture rails need to sit out a good 3 inches or so to give the photos enough of an angle that they don’t topple forward.  If it isn’t a very wide staircase I think you would be better off fixing the photos securely to the wall so that they can’t be bumped - much like the photo in my blog.  Good luck!  Sounds like a fun idea for cottage for sure.  Cobi

I like your idea of using shelves to display a collection of art & family photos. Do you think this could work on a staircase wall as well? Would like your opinion because I’m currently in the initial planning stages to display family photos going up the staircase at our cottage. I would need to reframe the existing photos that I have and go from there.
Thank-you so much!
